In a visual presentation of her book, Do You See What I See?, Claudia introduces students to some basics of writing poetry, including meter, rhyme schemes, etc. Then, in an interactive exercise, she guides kids in structuring a rhyming, four-line stanza that fits with examples utilized in her book. This involves viewing a small portion of a nature photograph (isolated from the rest of the picture) and writing poetry that explores what that visible piece of nature might just be. This exercise is a fun way to put imagination to work and to dive into crafting a descriptive and entertaining bit of verse. In the following example from her book, the first three lines ask questions about what is visible in a small, highlighted portion of a nature photograph, and the final line reveals what the image actually portrays:
Golden sheen of lion's coat?
Rusting side of fishing boat?
Wildfire flames that windstorm whips?
Autumn's kiss on aspen tips.
