CALLING ALL NATURALISTS! WRITING ON THE PROWL AND ON PAPER
Let's get outside--and let's bring the outdoors indoors! In this program with author Doe Boyle, we’ll focus on natural science by applying focused attention to natural objects in our personal collections. We'll record our observations and share our discoveries in this group workshop for up to 10 attendees.
In this STEAM experience, we’ll explore nature by bringing specimens inside—or by studying outside, if your virtual tools allow camera access to a garden plot or outdoor classroom. With me, students will reflect on how science principles are observable in their actual experiences as people living in rural, coastal, urban, and suburban environments. In this program, I’ll share the ways in which the writing process imitates the scientific method. I’ll explore how the precise, spare language of poetry helps to clarify meaning in our writing. I’ll show how I use scopes, binoculars, and my camera and cell phone to help me in my explorations of weather, flora, and fauna. Students will share what they discover while using their own devices. To hone their skills as naturalists, students will practice selective listening skills, collecting human-made and natural sounds in the environment. Students will then express their experiences and insights in original poetry, using such traditional forms as haiku and tanka and a contemporary form that uses the Fibonacci sequence pattern. Later, students can independently practice their study skills on outdoor observation days in backyard spaces, neighborhoods, and nearby nature preserves.
