Get to Know Your Earthworm!

Bring an earthworm to your visit and learn all about your new friend! Together, we'll do some simple (and worm-safe) science experiments that will let us "dig in" to the science of earthworms. After the program, you can keep your worm overnight or return it to nature.

Jodi Wheeler-Toppen

45 Minute Program

Bring an earthworm (see below) and join us as we observe our worms and figure out how they see, smell, move, eat, and more! We will do a series of 7 hands-on activities from the book This is a Book to Read with a Worm to learn more about them. We'll even use a special "x-ray vision" trick to peek inside at their organs (don't worry; it won't hurt them!). At the end of our visit, you can make your worm a home where it can stay until you are ready to return it to the soil outside. I am also happy to answer any questions about the process of researching and writing about worms or what it's like to be a science writer.

You will need a few common household objects as well as your worm, so check the list below.

An earthworm (Need help finding a worm? Here are some tips!)
Paper towel
one sheet of paper (scratch paper is fine)
Clear plastic bag such as a sandwich bag
Cotton swab
Rubbing alcohol OR hand sanitizer OR vanilla extract
Plastic single serve bottle (for water or soda) and scissors OR wide-mouth glass jar (e.g., spaghetti sauce jar)
Aluminum foil or black construction paper
Access to water and dirt (yard dirt is fine)
