Life Cycle of a Picture Book
This entertaining and educational school visit presentation for grades K–2 reinforces early literacy skills, touches on nonfiction and fiction writing, and inspires students’ imaginations. “Life Cycle of a Picture Book” shares the author’s writing process, childhood, and steps a story takes from idea to publication.

The presentation for beginning readers and writers draws examples from several of Janet’s books. The main featured read-aloud can be selected by the school for seasonal appropriateness, or to emphasize curriculum lessons such as inclusiveness, tolerance, conflict resolution, community, and caring.

The nonfiction segment of Janet’s presentation features her National Geographic books, Rain Forest Colors and Ocean Counting (named a Nat’l. Science Teachers Association Outstanding Science Trade Book).

Students will learn that:
We all have story ideas inside us!
Creation of a book involves many people and steps.
Good writers look at every word.
Revision is fun!
Authors (and kids) can set goals and work hard.
Good writing includes fiction and nonfiction forms.

Links provided to Janet’s free CCSS curriculum guides and related activities.
