Telling Stories About Our Background
Create a poem about your own family background! Participants learn an exercise that Torran used to create a group poem with Norwegian students called, “You Bring Out the Norwegian in Me.”
45 Minute Program
Participants learn about Torran’s time teaching as a Fulbright Roving Scholar in Norway and a group poem he created with students across the country.
Students:
This is an interactive workshop that celebrates the background and experiences of learners.
Participants need paper and pencil.
Can be done with small to large groups.
Adaptation of this exercise can even be done in other languages as Mario Perez adapted the exercise for students at the Newcomer Center.
Students:
- Explore stereotypes of America
- See how another country views America
- Write about their own background using their five senses

About the Author
