Where in the World? Making Magic with Maps
How many goats live in Texas? Where does Mothman have a home? Your curious kid and I will enjoy a lively conversation about the good, bad, and ugly of maps. Will we make our own map? You bet!
Your curious kid and I will look at and enjoy a lively conversation about the different types of maps, how to choose what goes on a map, and consider whether there is anything as a perfect or bad map. Students love to critique early drafts of my own book of maps and offer suggestions for how to improve other maps we find in newspapers and books. We will end by kicking off the creative process of making our very own map of an invented place, perhaps a state--complete with state foods, animals, and mottos.
During our visit, participants will use their bodies, brains, and drawing materials. Warning: it may get loud!
I can make this program an excellent experience no matter what the size of your group is: one kiddo, a group of 10, or even 30. For super-sized groups, consider a 45-minute session.
This visit is PERFECT for students in grades 4-5, and I love tweaking the presentation for students as young as 2nd grade and as old as 8th grade.

“What a fantastic time SFIS had with Gabrielle Balkan! She was awesome! She could definitely help instruct anyone on how to connect with young people. She had our students so engaged with movement, discussion, drawing, learning, and having a really fun time! Her visit certainly inspired our students to want to be authors and illustrators!” - Carolyn, Librarian, Saint Francis International School
